  • Description

AN EXHIBITION OF THE EARLY WORK OF SIDNEY NOLAN, ONE OF AUSTRALIA'S LEADING PAINTERS, OPENED IN LONDON, MAY 15. THE EXHIBITION IS A SELECTION OF PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS AND COLLAGE WORK GOING BACK TO 1937, WHEN THE ARTIST WAS TWENTY YEARS OLD.

MANY OF THE WORKS HAVE NOT BEEN EXHIBITED BEFORE, AND THROW A NEW LIGHT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS TALENTED PAINTER. NOLAN WAS LIVING IN AUSTRALIA DURING THE PERIOD COVERED BY THE WORKS ON SHOW, AND RELECT, ESPECIALLY IN THE LANDSCAPES, A STRONG FEELING FOR HIS NATIVE LAND.

A NUMBER OF THE PAINTING PORTRAY THE INFAMOUS AUSTRALIAN "BUSHRANGER" NED KELLY, WEARING THE GROTESQUE ARMOUR POPULAR IN THE LEGENDS OF THE COUNTRY. IN THE COLLAGE WORKS, NOLAN EXPERIMENTED WITH VICTORIAN ETCHINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS.

THE GREAT DISTANCE FROM THE CURRENT ART TRENDS FOR THE YOUNG PAINTER WORKING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD, APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN AN INCENTIVE TO DEVELOP THE HIGHLY INDIVIDUAL TECHNIQUE OF THE NOLAN TODAY.
