    THE MEN'S RACES WERE BETWEEN FRANCE, WEST GERMANY AND ITALY WITH SEVERAL AUSTRALIAN GUEST SWIMMERS COMPETING. FRANCE AND WEST GERMANY CONTESTED THE WOMEN'S RACES.

    MOSCONI WON THE FIRST EVENT ON THE PROGRAMME, THE 100 METRES BUTTERFLY STROKE, IN 59.5 SECONDS. HIS COUNTRYMAN, POMMAT, WAS SECOND WITH STOCKLASA OF GERMANY THIRD. THE YOUNG FRENCHMAN CAME BACK LATER TO WIN THE 400 METRES FREESTYLE IN EASY FASHION. HIS TIME WAS FOUR MINUTES 13.5 SECONDS. THIS WAS WELL OUTSIDE HIS WORLD RECORD FOR THE DISTANCE, WHICH HE SET EARLIER THIS MONTH. LUYCE OF FRANCE WAS SECOND WITH FASSNACHT OF WEST GERMANY THIRD.

    CHRISTINE CARON THE FRENCH CHAMPION WAS IN FINE FORM IN THE 100 METRES WOMEN'S BACKSTROKE AND WAS THREE SECONDS AHEAD OF THE OTHER FRENCH GIRL, MISS DUPREZ. THE WINNING TIME WAS ONE MINUTE 8.3 SECONDS. KRAUS OF GERMANY WAS THIRD.

    ANOTHER FRENCH WIN CAME IN THE MEN'S 100 METRES FREESTYLE. MICHAEL ROUSSEAU WON EASILY FROM KREMER OF WEST GERMANY IN 54.3 SECONDS.
