• Short Summary

MR. RONALD NGALA, KENYA'S OPPOSITION LEADER, ARRIVED BACK IN NAIROBI FROM THE KENYA CONSTITUTIONAL CONFERENCE?

  • Description

MR. RONALD NGALA, KENYA'S OPPOSITION LEADER, ARRIVED BACK IN NAIROBI FROM THE KENYA CONSTITUTIONAL CONFERENCE IN LONDON, ON MONDAY. IN MARKED CONTRAST TO MR. KENYATTA'S RETURN ON SUNDAY, WHEN HE WAS GREETED BY THOUSANDS - MR. NGALA WAS MET BY A MERE HANDFUL OF SUPPORTERS. THEY INCLUDED MR. MASINDE MULIRO, VICE-PRESIDENT OF KADU, MR. NGALA'S PARTY.

IN A STATEMENT AT THE AIRPORT, HE ATTACKED THE BRITISH AND KENYAN GOVERNMENTS, SAYING THAT THE BRITISH HAD DECIDED TO PLEASE KENYATTA AND DITCH THE MINORITIES. "REGIONALISM IN KENYA IS STILL ALIVE, NOT DEAD AND BURIED AS KANU WANTED IT." REGIONAL POWERS WERE "A LIVING BODY WITH TWO BROKEN LEGS", FOLLOWING THE CHANGES IN THE CONSTITUTION MADE IN LONDON. HE WENT ON TO ACCUSE MR. SANDYS, THE COMMONWEALTH AND COLONIAL SECRETARY, OF DISHONOURING THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.

LATER, REPORTING TO KADU'S PARLIAMENTARY GROUP, HE CHARGED MR. KENYATTA, THE PRIME MINISTER, WITH MOVING TOWARDS A "GHANIAN-TYPE RULE". KENYA WOULD SOON BE "AN INDEPENDENT COUNTRY WHICH HAS NO FREEDOM FOR INDIVIDUALS".

(SOME REPORTS FORECAST THAT SEVERAL MEMBERS OF KADU, INCLUDING THE VICE-PRESIDENT, MR. MULIRO, ARE PLANNING TO JOIN THE GOVERNMENT FOLLOWING THE LONDON AGREEMENT, INSPITE OF THEIR LEADER'S DECLARED OPPOSITION.)
