    Background: Mass firework displays along 16 miles of hills between Bonn and Linz, illuminated the River Rhine, June 11, as, for the first time in six years, the traditional festival of the "Rhine in Flames" was staged.

    About 30,000 celebrating people crammed a fleet of 75 passenger boats as they moved slowly downstream. Some ???00,000 onlookers crowded the river banks to share in the gaiety and singing.

    Visitors had travelled from far and near to witness the festivities and about 100,000 cars arrived in Bonn.
