  • Description

Thousands of chanting Greek demonstrators turned out to join a pro-Chile solidarity rally in Athens on Thursday (13 November) which was attended by Ortensia Allende, widow of the former Marxist Chilean President Salvador Allende.

President Allende was overthrown and killed over two years ago, and the controversial military junta which seized control under General Augusto Pinochet is firmly in control.

The Athens rally coincides with the anniversary of the foundation of the Greek Communist Party, which will be celebrated on Sunday (16 November).

Greek and foreign representatives addressed the crowds and spoke against Chile's military junta, which has suppressed all political opposition and whose actions have given rise to great criticism from many countries.

This month, a United Nations resolution criticising alleged human rights abuses in the country was put to the General Assembly.

Demonstrators shouting anti-Fascist and anti-United States slogans were addressed by both Madame Allende and Romes Sandra, Secretary General of the World Council of Peace.
