  • Description

NEARLY 30,000 INDONESIANS LIVING IN SABAH (NORTH BORNEO) HAVE CREATED A PROBLEM FOR THE MALAYSIAN AUTHORITIES. BECAUSE MANY OF THEM HAVE FAMILY TIES ACROSS THE BORDER IN INDONESIA, THEY PRESENT A SECURITY RISK.

THE INDONESIAN POPULATION OF SABAH CENTRES AROUND THE PORT TOWN, TAWAU. SOME 14,000 LIVE HERE AND THEY ARE HIGHLY VALUED AS PLANTATION WORKERS.

IN SPITE OF THE INDONESIAN CONFRONTATION OF MALAYSIA, INDONESIANS WORKING IN SABAH ARE TREATED IN MUCH THE SAME WAY AS THEY WERE BEFORE THE FORMATION OF MALAYSIA, ALTHOUGH FURTHER IMMIGRATION OF INDONESIANS HAS BEEN STOPPED. THE PLANTATION WORKERS ARE PROVIDED WITH FREE ACCOMMODATION, FOOD, MEDICAL TREATMENT, AND OTHER SOCIAL SERVICES.

NEAR THIS RUBBER PLANTATION IS THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE TENTH GURKHA RIFLES. THEIR JOB IS TO POLICE THE TOWN AND PROTECT IT FROM RAIDERS. THE OFFICERS WORK IN CLOSE LIAISON WITH PLANTATION OFFICIALS IN CASE OF SUBVERSION AMONG THE WORKERS. RECENTLY A FEW PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED FOR GIVING FOOD TO INSURGENTS IN THE DISTRICT.
