  • Description

The trial of another group of Greek Communists - 50 men and women charged with "treasonable activities endangering national security" began before a permanent court martial in Athens, Apr 26.

This follows proceedings, three weeks earlier, against 14 Greek Communists - including the wives of leaders of the country's outlawed Communist party - who were accused under the espionage law.

Official sources have disclosed that in recent years 483 Communist party agents have entered Greece clandestinely - 215 from Albania, 203 from Bulgaria and 65 from the Soviet Union. The total number of agents trained in 34 espionage schools "behind the Iron Curtain" was given as exceeding 1,000.

Communist trials in Greece have not passed unnoticed in Russia and her satellite countries. Soviet propaganda recently reached such a pitch that the Greek Foreign Minister. Averoff, approached Soviet Ambassador Serguiev, Apr 17, protesting at "this unacceptable attitude which might be construed as Soviet interference in Greek domestic affairs".
