    Background: The East River-Shumchun water project in Kwangtung province began its construction in February last year, comprising six dams, eight pumping stations, two regulating reservoirs, ten power transforming stations and a 16-kilometre artificial channel. The project is 83 kilometres long.

    A rally was held in Tung Huan County, Kwangtung Province on Feb. 17th, to celebrate the completion of the project. More than 200 compatriots from Hong Kong and Macao were present on the occasion.

    The ribbon was but by Lin Li-ming, Vice-Governor of Kwangtung.

    The project is designed to provide fresh water for Hong Kong as well as to irrigate more than a hundred thousand mu of land in the vicinity.
