Police in Chicago, USA, now have in custody a 25-year old seaman who hey believe is the man who killed eight nurses in that city on Thursday (14 July). The suspect is Richard Benjamin Speck, who was identified by a doctor after being taken to a hospital following an attempt at suicide.
The Chicago police claimed Saturday (16 July) that they had positively identified Speck as the killer of the nurses on the basis of fingerprints and an identification by the lone survivor of the attack, a Filipino nurse named Corazon Amrao. They said they had also located the hotel room Speck was living in. Late Saturday night, the owner of another hotel learned that an unidentified guest was suffering from self-inflicted wounds. The unidentified mans was taken to a Chicago hospital, where the doctor treating him saw a tattoo that identified him as the suspect, Speck. The doctor called the police, who then took Speck into custody and transferred him to the hospital ward of the county jail. Police officials in Chicago state that are convinced that Speck is the killer of the nurses.
