  • Description

The first of 250 Iranian soldiers arrived on the Golan Heights between Israel and Syria on sunday (7 September) to replace the Peruvian contingent of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force.

The were driven to their posts by members of the Polish contingent.

The Peruvians left two months ago but the unsettled state of affairs in the region prevented the Iranians from taking their place. The UN force is composed of 1500 men from Iran, Canada, Poland and Austria.

The force was organised in a UN resolution on 31 May, 1974 and was extended in May, 1975.

During the past two months, the Austrians have been doing double duty, their own covering for the Peruvians until their replacements arrived.

Although Egypt and Israel recently agreed to an interim peace settlement in the Sinai tension remains high in the Golan Heights and on the Israel-Lebanon border.

Palestine guerrilla organisations and the Syrian Government have denounced the peace agreement.
