Background: Brazil's Emerson Fittipaldi on Sunday (10 September) had a comfortable victory in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, and in the process clinched the 1972 World Formula One Racing Drivers Championship.

Fittipaldi's win was his fifth Grand Prix victory of the season, and took his championship points tally to 61 (after ten of the twelve races). His nearest rival, Denis Hulme of New Zealand, had only 31 points and has no chance of overhauling Fittipaldi in the remaining two races.

In the Italian Grand Prix, Fittipaldi drove his familiar back and cold Lotus. Second was Britain's Mike Hailwood in a Surtees, with Denis Hulme third in a McLaren Ford.

Jackie Ickx of Belgium led for a large part of the race, but was forced in to the pits with mechanical trouble in the 46th lap.

SYNOPSIS: The start of Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at Monza.. twenty five of the world's leading cars and racing divers. It was Switzerland's Clay Regazzoni who took the early load... but in the sixteenth lap he retired when the engine of his Ferrari burst into flames.

That left Jackie Ickx of Belgium in the lead. He also drove a Ferrari.

Peter Gethin of Britain in Car No. 23--a B.R.M....And Andrea de Adamich of Italy in a Surtees.

Britain's Mike Hailwood, in a Surtees had a great race, but for most of the journey, Jackis Ickx was in command.

All eyes were on Brazil's Emerson Fittipaldi --needing this race to clinch the world drivers championship.

Ickx again...he was forced out by mechanical trouble in the 46th lap.

Mario Andreotti was the darling of the Italian crowd--but he lost all chance when a lengthy pit stop put him a lap behind the leaders.

But in the end...a comfortable victory for Emerson Fittipaldi. It was his fifth Grand Prix victory of the season, and the one that clinched the drivers Championship for him. In the two remaining races of the season he cannot be overhauled on the points table.

The jubilant Fittipaldi is the first Brazilian to win the Championship. He's twenty-five, and is a comparative newcomer to Formula One racing. Victory in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza climaxes a career which began in go-karts in his native Brazil less than a decade ago.
