Background: AMRITSAR AND HIMALAYAN FOOTHILLS, INDIA

The Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Sikhs' holiest shrine, re-opened on June 25 for the first time since the Indian army stormed it on June 6 in a battle with Sikh rebels. During the three hours it was open, the Press Trust of India reported about twelve thousand pilgrims visited the shrine. At one point, said PTI, crowds were so large that pilgrims took 10 minutes to cross a short bridge leading across a man-made lake into the inner part of the 17th century temple. A Punjabi spokesman said the authorities hoped to extend the opening hours of the Golden Temple gradually as explosives experts cleared out weapons and ammunition. An estimated one thousand people, mostly Sikhs, died in the battle. The Sikhs have mounted a campaign for greater political and religious autonomy from the central government for the Punjab, where most of India's 12 million Sikhs live. On a tour of the Himalayan foothills, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi said people should guard against internal squabbles and strife, and added that Sikhs should not be regarded as suspects, and that the Sikhs should not entertain the idea of separatism. Mrs. Gandhi also expressed her sorrow over the bloodshed at the Golden Temple, while defending the army's attack.
