At Imola, near Bologna, Italy, June 12th, motocross riders from ten nations lined up for the start of the Shell International Gran Premio d'Italia. Clouds of dust rose from the sun-parched track - partly obscuring competitors from the huge crowds - as men and machines set out on their 2-stage marathon, representing nearly two hours of gruelling cross-country motor cycling.
Final classification after the two sections of the race showed success for Sweden: 1st was Swedish racer Lundin, on a Monark, with times of 47 min 35.1 sec (1st stage) and 47 min 52.1 sec (2nd stage); 2nd was Britain's Rickman, on a Metisse; 3rd, Sweden's Nilsson, on a Husqvarna; and 4th, Johansson, also of Sweden on a Lito. Lundin won the first leg, and Nilsson the second.
Following the Italian championship, placing in the World Motocross Championships - also dominated by Sweden - are as follows: equal first, Lundin and Nilsson; third, Tibblin, Sweden; fourth, Johansson, Sweden.
