  • Description

THREE BRITISH LABOUR PARTY MPS FLEW INTO SINGAPORE ON MAY 17 TO GATHER FACTS ON THE PROPOSED MALAYSIA.

THEY WERE MR.ARTHUR BOTTOMLEY, THE LABOUR PARTY'S "SHADOW MINISTER" FOR COLONIAL AND COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS, MR.FENNER BROCKWAY AND THE REVEREND REGINALD SORENSEN.

THEY DECLINED INVITATIONS TO SPEAK AT A MASS RALLY ON SUNDAY (MAY 19) IN THEIR HONOUR ORGANIZED BY THE ANTI-MALAYSIA BARISAN SOSIALIS PARTY AND THEIR ALLIES.

THE VISITORS, AS SOON AS THEY STEPPED OFF THEIR PLANE, WERE TAKEN TO THE RECEPTION ROOM TO MEET A GOVERNMENT RECEPTION COMMITTEE - AND THIS IMMEDIATELY TOUCHED OFF A CHARGE BY THE ANTI-MALAYSIA UNITED FRONT THAT THE BRITISH LABOUR LEADERS HAD BEEN "SMUGGLED PAST" THE OPPOSITION.

TUN LIM YEW HOCK, CHAIRMAN OF THE SINGAPORE PEOPLES' ALLIANCE AND THE BARISAN SOSIALIS LEADERS, ACCOMPANIED BY REPRESENTATIVES FROM OTHER ANTI-MALAYSIA PARTIES HAD BEEN WAITING FOR THE VISITORS IN THE DIPLOMATIC RECEPTION ROOM NEAR THE AIRPORT TARMAC.

THEY ALL RUSHED TO THE OTHER RECEPTION ROOM AND PROTESTED THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAD DENIED THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET THE BRITISH MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT.

MR.BOTTOMLEY, WHO IS THE UNOFFICIAL LEADER OF THE DELEGATION, SAID THAT HIS GROUP HOPED TO MEET AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE DURING THEIR THREE-DAY STAY HERE BEFORE LEAVING FOR MALAYA AND INDONESIA.
