  • Description

President Cevdet Sunay of Turkey arrived in the United States on Sunday evening (April 2) for a twelve-day official visit which is to include talks with U.S. President Turkish control of Cyprus.

A group of Turkish Cypriots now resident in the United States were on hand at the airport. They carried signs urging a Turkish Cyprus and calling Cypriot President Makarios the Cypriot Ho Chi Minh. President Sunay did not speak with them. Airport authorities kept the pickets at a considerable distance from him.

President Sunay begins his talks with President Johnson on Monday (April 3) at the White House in Washington. The talks are expected to include the Cyprus problem and the negotiation of new agreements covering U.S. military bases and personnel in Turkey. U.S.-Turkish relations have been described by some observers as somewhat strained since 1964 when the U.S. refused to side with Turkey in her quarrel with Greece over Cyprus.

The Turkish president has said he plans to make his nation's views on Cyprus known to President Johnson.

On the U.S. armed forces in Turkey, the Turkish government has requested a more active role in the operation of U.S. bases and a greater control in the use of U.S. nuclear weapons deployed on Turkish soil.
