Background: PROTESTS FOR AND AGAINST UNITED STATES POLICY IN VIETNAM.... YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THERE WERE DEMONSTRATIONS IN A NUMBER OF LARGE AMERICAN CITIES, INCLUDING MILWAUKEE, CHICAGO, NEW YORK, AND CLAREMONT, LOS ANGELES. THE TWO DAYS OF PROTESTS AGAINST THE ADMINISTRATION'S POLICY, ORGANISED BY THE 'NATIONAL CO-ORDINATING COMMITTEE TO END THE WAR IN VIETNAM', HAVE ALSO BROUGHT DEMONSTRATIONS IN FAVOUR OF UNITED STATES ACTION AND INVOLVEMENT IN VIETNAM.

AT THE SAME TIME THE STATE DEPARTMENT ISSUED A STATEMENT SAYING THAT STUDENTS 'TEACH-INS' OPPOSING THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY IN VIETNAM WERE MISCONSTRUED IN MANY COUNTRIES. THE STATEMENT SAID 'TEACH-INS' WERE MISLEADING IN REGARD TO AMERICAN OPINION BECAUSE THERE WAS ACTUALLY 'WIDESPREAD SUPPORT' FOR PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S POLICY.

ABOUT 350 PEOPLE GATHERED OUTSIDE THE INDUCTION (RECRUITMENT) CENTRE IN NEW YORK WATCHED THE YOUTH BURN HIS CALL-UP CARD, THEREBY RISKING A 5,000 DOLLAR (GBP1,700) FINE. TODAY (SATURDAY), THE NEW YORK AUTHORITIES HAVE BANNED A RALLY IN CENTRAL PARK IN THE HEART OF MANHATTAN, AFTER A 'PEACE PARADE' ALONG FIFTH AVENUE.
