• Short Summary

INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MRS. INDIRA GANDHI, TODAY (THURSDAY) RETAINED HER PARLIAMENTARY SEAT WITH A HEAVY?

  • Description

INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MRS. INDIRA GANDHI, TODAY (THURSDAY) RETAINED HER PARLIAMENTARY SEAT WITH A HEAVY MAJORITY, BUT HER RULING CONGRESS PARTY CONTINUED TO SUFFER REBUFFS IN RESULTS FROM THE COUNTRY'S NATIONAL ELECTIONS. IN DELHI, THE CONGRESS PARTY WAS HEAVILY DEFEATED BY THE RIGHT-WING JAN SANGH PARTY, WHILE IN RAJASTHAN, AN ATTEMPT BY THE MAHARANI OF JAIPUR TO OUST CONGRESS CANDIDATES WITH A CONCERTED EFFORT BY THE JAN SANGH AND SWATANTRA PARTIES APPEARED TO HAVE FAILED DESPITE A VICTORY BY THE MAHARAJAH OF BHARATPUR OVER INDIAN INFORMATION MINISTER, RAJ BAHADUR.

ALTHOUGH THE CONGRESS PARTY APPEARED LIKELY TO WIN A MAJORITY IN THE NATION'S CENTRAL PARLIAMENT, SEVERAL GOVERNMENT MINISTERS AND PARTY OFFICIALS WERE BEATEN. IN NEW DELHI ITSELF THE PARTY WAS CRUSHED, AND IN KERALA THERE WAS AN EXPECTED VICTORY BY THE COMMUNISTS.

AMONG INDIA'S STATES THE OUTLOOK TONIGHT (THURSDAY) WAS THAT THE CONGRESS PARTY COULD WIND UP CONTROLLING EIGHT ASSEMBLIES BUT, BESIDES THE COMMUNIST WIN IN KERALA, THERE WAS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE OPPOSITION PARTIES WOULD OUTNUMBER CONGRESS IN SIX. POLITICAL OBSERVERS EXPRESSED THE VIEW THAT INDIA FACED THE PROSPECT OF POLITICAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL STRUGGLES BECAUSE OF THE COUNTRY'S SHARING OF POWERS BETWEEN THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT AND THE STATES.

THE OBSERVERS INTERPRETED THE POLITICAL SWING AGAINST THE CONGRESS PARTY, WHICH HAS RULED INDIA SINCE INDEPENDENCE 20 YEARS AGO, AS A VOTE OF RESENTMENT IN A YEAR OF FAMINE, RISING PRICES AND ECONOMIC STAGNATION.
