    IN SOUTH AFRICA, THIRTEEN STUDENTS WHO HANDED OUT ANTI-GOVERNMENT PAMPHLETS AT JOHANNESBURG'S MAIN RAILWAY STATION PLEADED NOT GUILTY TO A CHARGE OF ILLEGALLY DISTRIBUTING LITERATURE ON RAILWAY PROPERTY WHEN THEY APPEARED IN COURT IN JOHANNESBURG YESTERDAY. NINETEEN STUDENTS WERE ORIGINALLY CHARGED.

    AFTER THE 19 HAD BEEN CHARGED, SIX SUBSEQUENTLY PAID 10 RAND (GBP5 16S STERLING) ADMISSION OF GUILT FINES.

    THE MAGISTRATE RULED YESTERDAY THAT THE CHARGE AGAINST THE OTHERS... INCLUDING THE PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENTS' REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL OF WITWATERSRAND UNIVERSITY ... WAS VALID AND DISMISSED AN ARGUMENT BY THEIR DEFENCE COUNSEL THAT THE PAMPHLETS DID NOT FALL UNDER THE DEFINITION OF LITERATURE.

    THE HEARING HAS BEEN ADJOURNED UNTIL THURSDAY, JULY THE 31ST.
