  • Description

Mr. J. W. K. Harlley, the Vice-Chairman of the ruling National Liberation Council of Ghana, flew into London today (Monday) on his way to New York where he will lead the Ghana delegation to the United Nations General Assembly.

Ghana's party of eight delegates arrived at London's Heathrow airport this evening under the leadership of Mr. Harlley, who is also Ghana's Inspector General of Police. Party members included Mr. F. E. Boaten, the Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. V. Olousu, the Attorney General, Mr. Eric Adjorlolo, Deputy Director of Ghana Broadcasting, Mr. Amegashle, the Commissioner for Industry, and Mr. Markham, Press Secretary to Mr. Harlley. They were welcomed by Brigadier Fowle of the Commonwealth Relations Office and Mr. S. K. Anthony, the Ghanaian High Commissioner.

The regular session of the General Assembly opens in New York tomorrow. But today an Emergency Session of the General Assembly held preliminary discussions on the Middle East crisis, before voting to transfer the topic to tomorrow's session. The vote was 93 in favour, none against, with three abstentions. One of these was Israel.

The Middle East and Vietnam are expected to command considerable attention during the new U.N. session, relegating somewhat the African and colonial topics which have preoccupied delegates in recent years.
