  • Description

Working quietly and reverently Vatican artisans put the finishing touches to the Sistine Chapel, Vatican City, in preparation for the Conclave of Cardinals who meet at the end of the week to elect a new Pope. Each of the 50 Cardinals "imprisoned" in the Chapel will have a cubicle with a bed. ON the walls of each cell are crucifixes and on the doors are the names of the respective Cardinals. Private bathrooms have also been installed together with apartments for the personal attends, cooks, waiters, barbers and so on, who will accompany the Cardinals.

The last, and one of the most important fixtures, to be put in place, was the celebrated stove. The colour of the smoke from this small scale incinerator will tell the world how the voting for the next Pope is progressing. If black smoke drifts from it the waiting crowd will know that the last ballot was indecisive. When white smoke belches from the chimney the 500 million or so Catholics throughout the world will know that their spiritual leader has ben chosen.
