    A VIET CONG STRONGHOLD IN KIEN PHONG, ABOUT 100 MILES SOUTH-WEST OF SAIGON, WAS DESTROYED LAST WEEK BY GOVERNMENT TROOPS. NEARLY 130 INSURGENTS WERE KILLED, AND 16 SUSPECTS CAPTURED. GOVERNMENT LOSSES WERE FOUR DEAD AND 22 WOUNDED.

    THE HIDEOUT WAS LOCATED ON THE RIGHT BANK OF THE MEKONG RIVER. IT HAD BEEN TURNED INTO A FORTIFIED STRONG POINT COMPLETE WITH TRENCHES AND MACHINE GUN NESTS.

    THE GOVERNMENT FORCES INCLUDED INFANTRY AND AMPHIBIOUS TROOP CARRIERS. NEWSMEN INVITED TO THE BATTLE AREA WERE SHOWN AROUND BY GENERAL LAM VAN PHAT, WHO CONFERRED MEDALS ON SOME OF HIS SOLDIERS.

    WEAPONS SEIZED WERE 30 MACHINE GUNS, FOUR SUBMACHINE GUNS, 14 RIFLES, 37 GRENADES AND IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS.

    MEANWHILE, IN THE HAU NGHAI PROVINCE, NEAR THE CAMBODIAN BORDER GOVERNMENT TROOPS, IN A MOPPING-UP OPERATION, KILLED 11 INSURGENTS AND CAPTURED 51.
