Background: Ambassador Zaid Al-Rifa'i of Jordan was the victim today (Wednesday) of an assassination attack in a machine gun ambush in London, only a few hundred yards from his Embassy.
The Ambassador underwent an operation on his right hand after the attack in which his Daimler limousine was riddled with bullets by a gunman who blasted at it from a traffic island as it negotiated a slow turn around a corner in the fashionable residential district of Kensington. Police were on the spot within minutes and an alert went out for the two men as airports and other international exits from the country were being carefully watched. In the meantime, a spokeswomen for the Black September Organisation in Beirut claimed responsibility for the attack -- this is the same extremist group which was reportedly responsible for the assassination of Jordan's Prime Minister Wasfi Tell in Cairo three weeks ago.
Ambassador Rifa'i has long been closely associated with King Hussein--as Director of Protocol, Private Secretary, General Secretary and Head of the Court. H is also said to be tipped as a possible future Prime Minister.
As special guards are being placed on all Jordanian diplomats--and on King Hussein's children in English schools--Scotland Yard had announced the launching of a full-scale check on all know Arab extremist organisations and their sympathisers in Britain.
Although the Ambassador's injuries are not serious, he is said to be being detained in hospital for a few days.
