Background: In Manila yesterday (Friday), Pope Paul paid a courtesy call on President Ferdinand Marcos at the presidential Malacanang Palace.

He went there late in the afternoon on the first day of his three-day visit to the Philippines.

After signing the Visitors Book, he went on the balcony to give his benediction to a big crowd of mostly priests and nuns who had gathered to catch a glimpse of the Pontiff.

Later her met members of the Filipino Cabinet and their wives.

During the call at the palace, the Pope urged President Marcos to work for a more equitable distribution of wealth in the Philippines. He said more should be done to help the poor and needy.

The Pope leaves Manila on Monday for Samoa and Australia.
