  • Description

THE KENNEDY ROUND TARIFF NEGOTIATIONS WERE TONIGHT (SUNDAY) REPORTED TO BE CLOSE TO AGREEMENT ON A HUGE NEW DEAL TO LIBERALISE WORLD TRADE. THE DISCUSSIONS HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR FOUR YEARS, AND WERE DUE TO END AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT.

REUTER REPORTS THAT OPTIMISM WAS RUNNING HIGH THAT A PACKAGE AGREEMENT WOULD BE REACHED SOMETIME TOMORROW.

IT WAS REPORTED THAT RIGHT UP UNTIL THE MIDNIGHT DEADLINE NEGOTIATORS WERE INVOLVED IN DISCUSSIONS ON KEY ISSUES, INCLUDING TARIFF AGREEMENTS ON CEREALS AND CHEMICALS.

THE COMPLETE PACKAGE DEAL, ACCORDING TO REUTER, WOULD CUT TARIFFS ON TENS OF THOUSANDS OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS. THE NEWS AGENCY SAYS THE FIRST REAL BREAKTHROUGH TODAY CAME WHEN NEGOTIATORS AGREED ON A NEW WORLD MINIMUM PRICE FOR WHEAT OF 1.73 U.S. DOLLARS (12 SHILLINGS AND THREEPENCE STERLING) A BUSHEL.

MAJOR WHEAT EXPORTING NATIONS, INCLUDING CANADA AND AUSTRALIA, HAD BEEN PRESSING FOR THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE PRICE, BUT MODIFIED THEIR DEMANDS.

THE SUCCESS OF THE 54-NATIONS TALKS WOULD LEAD TO LOWER IMPORT DUTIES, AND SUBSEQUENTLY TO LOWER PRICES FOR CONSUMER GOODS.
