  • Description

A recent football match in Hong Kong between the Colony's players and the visiting Madureira' team from Brazil, very nearly ended in a riot.

During the game, the conduct of the Brazilian players frequently raised the ire of spectators and the referee repeatedly asked visiting officials to bring their team under control.

Despite these constant quarrels with the referee - and the frequent stopping of play to settle disputes - the Brazilian were soon ahead with three goals to nil.

Towards the end of the oft-disturbed game it was an irate Hongkong player who brought things to a head. He made a foul tackle on a Brazilian and was sent off the ground. But the Brazilians refused to remove their injured player and began arguing.

The referee, in sheer desperation, blew his whistle and ended the game 12 minutes before time. Then the crowd of nearly 20,000 joined in. What started as a good-natured protest against the ending of game, nearly deteriorated into a riot as people milled around jeering, stone-throwing and demanding a refund of money for their tickets.

Hong Kong police arrived in full force, and brought the crowd under control with a police officer as the only casualty - he was hit on the face with a stone.
