Background: INTRODUCTION: The new United States Ambassador to Lebanon, Mr. Richard Parker, arrived in Beirut on Sunday (13 February) to take up his post eight months after his predecessor, Mr. Francis Meloy, was murdered at the height of the country's 19-month long civil war.
SYNOPSIS: There was strict security at Beirut's international airport for Mr. Parker's arrival. The airport was closed throughout much of the war and has only recently re-opened. The new ambassador is a career diplomat and middle East specialist. He previously served in Beirut in the early 1960's, and arrived back five days before a scheduled visit by U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance. Mr. Parker talked to newsmen about his posting.
