Background: World Cup Soccer...and in Argentina, Scotland regained its honour with a three-two victory over the Netherlands at Mendoza on Sunday night (11 June), but the failed to gain the margin of victory necessary to carry it through to the next round of the tournament. After two disastrous defeats, Scotland needed a three-nil victory to win a placed in the next round. In group four, Peru and the Netherlands now go through to the last eight.

SYNOPSIS: Scotland opened the match with a passion to win, but an early shot from Bruce Rioch was stopped when it hit the crossbar, Scotland's attack cut holes in the sluggish Dutch defence, but over-zealous Stuart Kennedy gave away a penalty to The Netherlands and Rob Rensenbrink slotted it home.

A minute before half time, Scotland drew level. Asa Hartford and Joe Jordan set it up and Kenny Dalglish hooked it in.

Archie Gemmell put Scotland ahead soon in to the second half -- from a penalty and then, with a magnificent break through the Dutch defence, put a clean shot home. Suddenly it looked as if the Scots could pull through.

But though the Dutch side lacked the tenacity and courage displayed by the Scots, they knew their chance of a place were also in the balance. With a new burst of energy, their captain Rudi Krol gained possession and sent a raking pass through to Johnny Rep who took it in his stride, then sent a rocket of a shot in past Alan Rough.

It was too much. Scotland had somehow to find two more goals to regain their passport to the next round. A good shot by Tom Forsyth sailed over the bar and signalled the end of Scotland's World Cup hopes.
