    AS FRANCE'S 1ST JULY DEADLINE FOR ITS WITHDRAWAL FROM THE INTEGRATED MILITARY SYSTEM OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION DREW CLOSE, A UNITED STATES AIR FORCE UNIT PREPARED TO MOVE TO BRITAIN. AND, IN WEST GERMANY, THE FRENCH FLAG WAS LOWERED FOR THE LAST TIME TODAY (30 JUNE) AS FRENCH OFFICERS LEFT THE STAFF OF NATO'S FOURTH TACTICAL AIR FORCE, AT RAMSTEIN.

    AT EVREUX AIR BASE, IN FRANCE, THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE'S 513TH TROOP CARRIER WING, BEGAN ITS MOVE TO THE ROYAL AIR FORCE STATION, AT MILDENHALL, IN EAST ENGLAND. TWO SQUADRONS OF 32 C-130 AIRCRAFT WILL BE BASED AT MILDENHALL.

    THE FIRST PLANE'S DEPARTURE, PILOTED BY COLONEL HAROLD G. FULMER, COMMANDER OF THE CARRIER WING, SIGNALLED THE START OF THE REMOVAL OF SOME 30,000 US FORCES FROM FRANCE. THEY HAVE TO BE OUT BY NEXT APRIL.

    MEANWHILE, AT RAMSTEIN, THERE WAS NO FORMAL FAREWELL FROM AMERICAN, CANADIAN AND WEST GERMAN AIR FORCE PERSONNEL -- STATIONED THERE SINCE 1956, UNDER INTEGRATED NATO COMMAND -- AS THE FRENCH FLAG WAS LOWERED FOR THE LAST TIME.
