  • Description

Two weeks of Christmas celebrations reached a climax in the Spanish capital, Madrid on Saturday night (January 5), with a huge street procession.

The traditional procession precedes the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6, and commemorates the journey of the Three Kings (or Magi) to Bethlehem, and the offering of gifts to the infant Jesus Christ.

In Spain, the Feast of the Epiphany --- rather than Christmas Day --- is the time to exchange presents and children receive gifts from the Three Kings--rather than Santa Claus.

The children leave their shoes on the windowsills of their homes after the procession; the Kings, according to the legend, put gifts in the shoes.

The street procession ends with a re-enactment of the Kings' offering of gifts to the infant Jesus.
