  • Description

Australian's Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser, met his counterpart in Papua-New Guinea, Mr Michael Somare for talks on Friday (11 February).

SYNOPSIS: They met in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, mainly to discuss the future of the tiny Torres Strait Islands. Papua New Guinea is claiming territorial rights under new legislation establishing its southern boundaries.

After the talks, Mr Fraser and his wife attended a traditional banquet, dinning on suckling pig and fruit.

The Australian government has made no official policy statement on the new legislation, but the State of Queensland has expressed strong dissatisfaction. Its Premier, Mr Joh Bjelke-Petersen, says the Torres Strait island have been part of Queensland since the Australian Federation was established. He says the inhabitants have no desire to come under the jurisdiction of Papua New Guinea and called for stern action to get the new act rescinded.

After watching a spectacular display of native dancers, the two Prime minister, spoke to newsmen. But both were guarded on the question of boundaries and their talks were held in private.
