AFTER SOME 4000 COMMUNIST PARTY MEMBERS RALLIED IN ROME'S ST. JOHN'S SQUARE TO HEAR LABOUR?

  • Description

AFTER SOME 4000 COMMUNIST PARTY MEMBERS RALLIED IN ROME'S ST. JOHN'S SQUARE TO HEAR LABOUR UNION LEADER AGOSTINO NOVELLA SPEAK AT A MAY DAY RALLY, A SMALL GROUP OF MAOIST SUPPORTERS ANGERED THE COMMUNISTS BY WAVING RED BANNERS AND SHOUTING "REVOLUTION" AND WERE ORDERED AWAY FROM THE SQUARE BY OFFICIALS. THE MAOIST THEN MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS AND LATER CLASHED WITH POLICE.

IN ITALY, MAY DAY IS A NATIONAL HOLIDAY AND ALL SHOPS, FACTORIES AND OFFICES ARE CLOSED. THE ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY ORGANISED MOST OF THE MAY DAY RALLIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING THE CENTRAL MASS RALLY IN ST. JOHN'S SQUARE SPONSORED BY THE CGIL (COMMUNIST TRADE UNION FEDERATION). THE CENTRAL THEMES OF THIS MASSED MEETING WERE "NEW AND EXTENDED FORMS OF UNITED STRUGGLE FOR GREATER WORKERS POWER" AND A CONCENTRATED CAMPAIGN FOR POLICE DISARMAMENT.

THE MAIN SPEAKER WAS THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE CGIL, AGOSTINO NOVELLA, WHO SAID THAT STATE WORKERS WOULD GO ON STRIKE IF THE GOVERNMENT DELAYED MEETING THEIR DEMANDS FOR ADMINISTRATIVE AND PAY REFORMS. HE ALSO ACCUSED THE GOVERNMENT OF USING POLICE TO INTIMIDATE ITALIAN WORKERS, BUT ADMITTED THAT IT WAS POSSIBLE THAT EXTREMISTS WITHIN THE COMMUNIST LABOUR MOVEMENT WERE RESPONSIBLE OF ATTEMPTING TO PROVOKE AND DIVIDE THEIR RANKS.

DURING THE RALLY, MAOIST YOUTHS, WAVING THE RED BOOKLETS OF THE "THOUGHTS OF CHAIRMAN MAO" AND SHOUTING "REVOLUTION", ANGERED THE COMMUNISTS AND WERE ORDERED AWAY FROM THE SQUARE BY OFFICIALS. SOME 300 YOUTHS BROKE AWAY AND TRIED TO MARCH THROUGH THE STREETS TO THE CITY CENTRE, WAVING RED BANNERS AND CHANTING MAOIST SLOGANS. THESE DEMONSTRATORS HAD ONLY GONE ABOUT 200 YARDS (180 METRES) WHEN RIOT POLICE WHICH WERE STATIONED NEAR THE SQUARE CHARGED AND DISPERSED THE MAOISTS.

THE ITALIAN DEMONSTRATIONS WERE PART OF THE WORLD-WIDE MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS WHICH WERE, ON THE WHOLE, MORE SUBDUED THAT HAD BEEN EXPECTED. THIS WAS DUE MAINLY TO MASSIVE SECURITY PRECAUTIONS ON THE PART OF THE AUTHORITIES OF EVERY NATION, WHICH RANGED FROM THE MOSCOW BAN ON THE TRADITIONAL MILITARY PARADE AND THE CZECHOSLOVAK CANCELLATION OF MASS PARADES TO ISRAELI WORKERS GIVING UP THEIR TRADITIONAL RIGHT TO STRIKE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY AND ALL GOING TO WORK.
