The Thai Prime Minister, Mr. Thanin Kraivichien, was at Bangkok airport with other leading Thai government officials to greet the Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Hussein On.
Datuk Hussein arrived on a three day visit to Thailand during which he signed a new Malaysian-Thai border agreement.
The signed pact will enable the armed forces of both countries to carry out "hot pursuit" operations against communist insurgents crossing the border.
Heavy security was in force at the airport for the Prime Minster's arrival.
The Thai Foreign Minister, Mr. Upadit Pachariyankun, said the new agreement would enable both countries to continue what he termed, "the effective fight against the guerrillas.
The new pact replaces a similar agreement, discarded by the former Thai civilian government, under which Malaysian forces had been allowed to operate in the Thai border region.
Now troops from both countries can cross the border in anti-guerrilla operations.
