Background: THE DRAWN-OUT CONFLICT IN SOUTH VIETNAM REMAINS FOR THE MOST PART A WAR OF SLOW AND COUNTER-BLOW IN THE JUNGLE AND THE PADDY FIELDS. BUT IN THE MONTHS SINCE AUGUST 1964, IT HAS ENTERED A NEW PHASE -- INTO THE SKIES OVER THE INDO-CHINA PENINSULAR.

IN EACH INSTANCE THE USE OF AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE AIRCRAFT FOR STRIKES AGAINST NORTH VIETNAM, HAVE BEEN IN RETALIATION FOR ATTACKS BY THE VIETCONG SOUTH OF THE 17TH PARALLEL. THE TACTICAL REASON BEHIND THESE STRIKES IS THE BELIEF THAT THE VIETCONG ARE SUPPLIED AND SUPPORTED FROM THE NORTH.

THE FIRST STRIKE AGAINST NORTH VIETNAM TOOK PLACE ON AUGUST 5, 1964, WHEN 64 U.S. NAVY PLANES STRUCK AT NORTH VIETNAMESE NAVAL INSTALLATIONS, DESTROYING 25 TORPEDO BOATS AND WRECKING BERTHING FACILITIES AND OIL STORAGE TANKS. THE RAID WAS IN RETALIATION, SAID THE U.S. GOVERNMENT FOR ATTACKS ON U.S. DESTROYERS IN THE GULF OF TONKIN, A FEW DAYS EARLIER.

AS A RESULT, UNITED STATES AIR POWER INCREASED IN SOUTH VIETNAM, BUT THERE WERE NO FURTHER RAIDS UNTIL FEBRUARY 7, WHEN CARRIER-BASED AIRCRAFT STRUCK AT DONG HOI, JUST NORTH OF THE 17TH PARALLEL. NEXT DAY, ANOTHER RAID AND THEN ANOTHER ON FEBRUARY 11.

FEW DETAILS OF THE U.S. AIR BUILD-UP HAVE BEEN DIVULGED, BUT SOME OF THE MOST MODERN AIRCRAFT IN SERVICE WITH THE U.S. AIR FORCE HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED IN SOUTH VIETNAM. SUPER-SABRES, DELTA DARTS AND VOODOO AIRCRAFT ARE AMONG TYPES THAT HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED, AND ALL SUPERSONIC. RECENTLY, A REUTERS CAMERAMAN FLEW ON A PATROL WITH TWO DELTA DARTS, BASED AT SAIGON.

THE SWEEP TOOK THE AIRCRAFT NORTH ALONG THE COAST OF SOUTH VIETNAM. THERE WAS NO OFFENSIVE ACTION, BUT THE PLANES DID LOSE ALTITUDE TO TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT SOME MERCHANT SHIPS STEAMING CLOSE TO SHORE. OFTEN, SUPPLIES FOR THE VIETCONG HAVE BEEN LANDED FROM SMALL SHIPS AT ISOLATED LOCATIONS ALONG THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE COAST.

AIRCRAFT OF THE U.S. AIR FORCE ARE BEGINNING TO PLAY AN EVEN GREATER ROLE IN THE WAR AGAINST THE VIETCONG. WITHIN THE PAST FEW WEEKS, THEY HAVE BEEN USED TO ATTACK CONCENTRATIONS OF THE VIETCONG WITHIN SOUTH VIETNAM. MAINLY, AMERICAN-BUILT CONBERRAS, THE B-57, HAVE BEEN USED IN THESE MORE RECENT OPERATIONS.

THE ATTACKS ACCORDING TO PUBLISHED RECONNAISSANCE SURVEYS, HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL, ALTHOUGH NONE OF THE RAIDS HAVE BEEN WITHOUT COST TO THE AMERICANS. IN ALL THE MAJOR STRIKES A TOTAL OF SIX AMERICAN AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN LOST, BUT IN MOST CASES THE PILOTS HAVE BEEN RESCUED.

AIRCRAFT ARE NOW DEPLOYED CLOSE TO THE 17TH PARALLEL AT BASES LIKE DANANG, WHERE MARINES AND HAWK GROUND-TO-AIR MISSILES HAVE BEEN BROUGHT IN TO DEFEND THE BASE FROM ANY ATTACKS.

THE WAR WITHOUT A SEEMING END IN SIGHT HAS A WIDENING DIMENSION -- THE AIR.
