    THE CONDITION OF FRANCE'S FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT PATIENT, 66-YEAR-OLD LORRY DRIVER CLOVIS ROBLAIN, WAS TONIGHT SAID TO BE EXTREMELY SERIOUS. A MEMBER OF THE MEDICAL TEAM WHICH CARRIED OUT THE OPERATION SAID ROBLAIN WAS FIGHTING FOR LIFE, AND THERE WAS A FEAR THAT HE HAD SUFFERED BRAIN DAMAGE. PROFESSOR MAURICE MERCADIER, CHIEF SURGEON AT PARIS'S LEFT BANK HOSPITAL DE LA PITIE, OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED THE TRANSPLANT THIS MORNING.

    M. ROBLAIN, THE OLDEST MAN TO HAVE A HEART TRANSPLANT, WAS SUFFERING FROM A CHRONIC HEART DISEASE WHICH WOULD SOON HAVE KILLED HIM. DURING A DRAMATIC ALL-NIGHT OPERATION - FROM 2200 LOCAL TIME SATURDAY UNTIL 0700 HOURS YESTERDAY MORNING - SURGEONS WORKED TO GIVE HIM THE HEART OF A 23-YEAR-OLD MAN.

    IN HIS ANNOUNCEMENT PROFESSOR MERCADIER BRIEFLY DESCRIBED THE OPERATION, WHICH WAS CARRIED OUT BY PROFESSOR CHRISTIAN CABROL, HEADING A TEAM OF MORE THAN A DOZEN DOCTORS.
