  • Description

The Nigerian Head of State, Lieutenant_General Olusegun Obasanjo, has made his first official visit to Togo. During his two-day visit, he discussed with President Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo a wide range of international issues, and signed a joint communique outlining their attitudes. In particular, the two leaders rigorously condemned the regimes in Rhodesia and South Africa for allegedly maintaining centres of strong tension in Africa.

SYNOPSIS: General Obasanjo arrived in Lome on Friday (8 September) for the second stage of his three-nation tour of member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

He was welcomed at the airport by President Eyadema and a twenty-one-gun salute. The togolese host told the Nigerian leader and his fifty-strong entourage that the scale of the welcome indicated the "great friendly and brotherly regard" felt by togo for the visitors.

Nigerians currently living in Togo joined i the celebrations as the two leaders travelled into the city centre for talks. President Eyadema and General Obasanjo, in their communique afterwards, underlined the unease they felt about the worsening situation in Southern Africa. They attributed it to the persistence there of colonialism, racism and foreign exploitation.

The two leaders also reaffirmed their solidarity with the Arab people in the search of a just solution to the Palestinian problem in the Middle East. But one of the main results of their discussions was a joint hope that other members of ECOWAS would join in the signing of a defence treaty to strengthen their non-aggression agreement made in Lagos last April.
