PSV Eindhoven beat Groningen 3-1 at home on April 14 in the Dutch honour division. Groningen, in white shirts,s cored first with a header by Briton Rob McDonald. Eindhoven quickly hit back, with goals -- two of them headers -- coming from Jurrie Koolhof, Huub Stevens, and Swedish international Glenn Hyssen. The win gave Eindhoven an outside chance of winning the championship.

In West Germany, Nuremberg lost 4-2 at home to Bayern Munich, although they too scored first with two goals in ten minutes. Alois Reinhardt notched the first in the third minute when he hit home the rebound after the keeper had saved his header. Nuremberg, in white, scored seven minutes later with a Lieberwirth shot from the edge of the box. Sixty seconds later, Bayern pulled one back through Hans Pfluegler. Reinhold Mathy scored two in a row, in the 48th and 84th minutes with Norbert Nachtwein making the final score 4-2, to hold Bayern's position at the top of the first division table. In Italy, league leaders Juventus, in striped shirts, were held to a 0-0 draw by Roma -- beaten 2-0 midweek in their first leg, semi-final European cup tie against Scottish champions Dundee United. Roma had the best chances of scoring, when No. 9 Roberto Pruzzo hit the bar in the first half, and headed clean over in the second half in front of an open goal. Juventus maintained their three point lead at the top of the table.
