    INTRODUCTION Soviet gymnasts once again showed their dominance in the gymnastics field during the Moscow News tournament held in Moscow on Saturday (2 April). The competition attracted competitors from 25 countries and was seen as a trial run for the 1980 Olympic Games in the Soviet Union.

    SYNOPSIS: Soviet competitors took all the major prizes in all events, which were held in the Luzhniki Palace of sports. Many of them were the young, up-and-coming gymnasts who are hoping to make their mark at the Moscow Olympics.

    The Soviet Union's fourth ranked men's gymnast, Vladimir Markelov, took first place overall in his section.

    Runner-up in the men's section was Sergei Khizhnyakov, a 19-year-old soldier. He's seen here going through his paces on the vaulting horse. An unplaced competitor was Horhe Rotche of Cuba, seen here on the rings.

    One of the Soviet's top young women gymnasts is 16-year-old Mariya Filatova. She was one of the champions at the Montreal Games and won the women's section in the Moscow news tournament.

    The speciality of Sergei Khizhnyakov is the parallel bars. He won this section is Saturday's tournament and no-one could come close to the complexity and perfection of his performance.

    Vladimir Markelov took the lead after his second exercise and kept it to win the title. He's a 20-year-old university student. In third place was Eberhard Ginger of East Germany.
