  • Description

The way was clear on Friday (25 February) for detailed examination in committee of West German Chancellor Willy Brandt's proposed treaties of reconciliation with the Soviet Union and Poland following a mammoth three-day debate in the Bundestag (Parliament). The debate connected with the first reading saw vigorous opposition by the Christian Democrats -- led by Reiner Barzel -- and equally vigorous defence by the governing coalition of Social Democrats and free Democrats.

The debate ended without the expected test vote on procedure of referral to committee. Instead, both sides agreed to refer the treaties for consideration to only two Parliamentary committees -- instead of three as wished by the Opposition -- the Foreign Affaire and Legal Committees.

Under the historic treaties, signed in 1970, West Germany renounces all claims to its former Eastern territories, under Polish rule since World War Two, and also acknowledges all postwar borders.
