Background: An Italian-designed 105mm pack howitzer, recently adopted by the British Army because of its standard NATO calibre, was demonstrated in action - for the first time in Britain - on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, Apr 8.

During a precision firing test carried out by the 33rd Parachute Light Regiment, Royal Artillery, a target 3,500 yards away was successfully engaged, first by using the 105mm as a field gun and then as a howitzer. Used against a stationary tank about 1,000 yards away, the new gun was dead on target with the first round.

Loading is more difficult when the gun is cocked up as a howitzer, and shells took twice as long to reach the target as they soared on a high ballistic curve over an imaginary hill in front of an international observer team. Nevertheless, the gun is thought to be an effective replacement for the 4.2 mortar since it has more accuracy and a range in excess of five miles.

Half the weight of a 25-pounder, the howitzer can easily be airlifted by a helicopter or parachuted from a transport plane. Dismantled into a dozen pieces it can also be carried by mules for operation in mountainous territory.
