  • Description

Fierce fighting has been going on this week at Dat Do, about 40 miles (64 Kms) east of Saigon.

A force of South Vietnamese regulars retreated after days of fighting against a force thought to be a local Vietcong unit--heavily reinforced with North Vietnamese soldiers.

The South Vietnamese regulars were replaced at the weekend by an elite Rangers unit which, when this film was shot, was entrenched at Dat De and was using tear gas in an effort to dislodge the enemy force.

A report from the Saigon Command on Sunday (28 May) said the Rangers at Dat De had fought a force of Communist troops, estimated at battalion strength. The Saigon Command says the Rangers--helped by artillery and air strikes--killed 75 of the enemy while taking two dead and seven wounded themselves.
