  • Description

The Western German foreign Minister Walter Scheel arrived in Budapest on Sunday (7th April) for talks with his Hungarian counterpart, Mr. Frigyes Puja. They spent a full day of talks on Monday (8th April) - Herr Scheel was to leave again on Tuesday. Most of Monday was expected to be taken up with discussions on trade relations and international issues.

Trade between the two countries has blossomed since a four-year agreement was signed in 1970. West Germany is Hungary's biggest western trading partner with a turnover last year reaching :311 million (1,900 million marks). But the trade balance is tipped heavily in Bonn's favour.

Hungary was expected to urge an easing of restrictions on its exports. Later in the year, Hungary hops to sign a ten-year co-operation agreement with West Germany which would accord with Common Market regulations and ease restrictions against its exports.

Diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level were established between the two countries last December, and Herr Scheel's visit is the first he has made to Hungary since then.

A mixed Hungarian-West Germany government commission began discussions in Budapest on the development of co-operative ventures on the same day as herr Scheel's talks with Hungary's leaders. The commission was to meet until April the tenth.
