    Background: Three leftwing extremists were hanged in Ankara's Central Civilian Prison Saturday (May 6) as the Turkish government enforced r right curfew and armed forces stayed on alert to combat reprisals by underground groups.

    The three self-confessed members of the "Turkish People's Liberation Army" - Deniz Gesmis, 24, Yusuf Aslan, 25, and Huseyin Inan, 21 - were among six under sentence of death whose release was demanded by four Turkish gunmen who hijacked a Turkish DC-C jet to Sofia, Bulgaria, on Wednesday (May 3).

    The Turkish Government rejected the demand and on Thursday (4 May) the hijackers released the passengers and accepted an offer o political asylum in Bulgaria.

    The three executed on Saturday were all convicted of attempts to overthrow the constitution by force, and of kidnapping four U.S. airman who were late released unharmed.

    The executions were the first since martial law was declared in Turkey a year ago in a bid to curtail political extremism.
