  • Description

On the fourth and last day of this State visit to Italy Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia today (Monday) visited the Vatican where, as the Head of Africa's oldest Christian State, he was received by Pope Paul.

The African ruler is the first Ethiopian Emperor to be received at the Vatican since the Coptic Church of Ethiopia broke with the Papacy following the Council of Calcedon in the year 451 a.d. And this historic meeting has raised hopes of a permanent reconciliation between them.

The Emperor - who last travelled to Italy in 1924 when he was acting as Regent for his ageing Mother, Empress Zauditu - has often been invited to visit before, but it has been repeatedly postponed because of the presence in Rome of a huge obelisk taken from Ethiopia by the Mussolini forces which invaded the African State in 1935. Now a Commission has been set up to decide what is to be done about the obelisk which dates back to pre-Christian times.

Pope Paul and Emperor Haile Selassie exchanged commemorative gifts and discussed several subjects - reported to concentrate mainly on the battle for world peace, for which both men have long been active workers.
