Background: The first meeting of the Central Committee of the Polish Communist Party to be held under martial law saw the country's military ruler, General Wojciech Jaruzelski, strongly criticise the United States. He claimed the threat to world peace had grown considerably in recent times and said Poland had been used by the West as an instrument to exert pressure on the Soviet Union and the Socialist bloc. In the speech, he repeated his arguments to justify the imposition of martial law, saying the action had saved Poland from anarchy. It is believed that not all the Central Committee members were present at the meeting, some of them having released from the Party in protest at the introduction of martial law.
