Background: Police in New Delhi fired teargas grenades to disperse crowds of demonstrators outside the United States embassy on Friday (23 March).
A cordon of police surrounded the entrance gates and more guarded the door of the embassy as about 300 supporters of the right wing Jan Sangh party protested against the resumption of United States shipments of arms to Pakistan.
The slogan-yelling, banner-waving crowd managed to break through the first police cordon, then tried to break through the second. That's when the police hurled eight grenades in front of the crowd.
The demonstrators claimed that ten of their number were injured by police. The police denied the allegation, and said that 15 policemen were hurt by the demonstrators. Eventually, the crowd dispersed.
SYNOPSIS: In New Delhi on Friday, hundreds of right-wing supporters of the formers Chief Executive Councillor Jan Sangh marched to the United States embassy in Chanakyapuri to protest against the resumption of United States shipments of arms to pakistan. The noisy procession started a mile away at Teen Murti, and by the time it had reached the embassy, it had grown to about three hundred. Police kept the marchers under observation, but they made no move to interfere with them, or to remove their banners.
But at the embassy, police had two cordons of men ready. One around the main doorway, another around the entrance gates. The demonstrators managed to break through the first cordon, then they tried to get into embassy. That's when police decided to use teargas. They broke eight grenades in front of the crowd.
The teargas sent the crowd running away from the embassy. They reassembled to chant their slogans, but they took no other action.
