  • Description

The People of Bahrain went to the polls for the first time on Friday (1 December) to elect 22 members to a council with the initial task of agreeing to a draft Constitution.

The council will have 44 members, including 12 Cabinet ministers and ten nominated representatives.

More than 90 per cent of the 30,000 registered voters went to the polls. Only men were permitted to cast a vote, despite persistent lobbying for women to have voting rights under the eventual constitution.

Fifty-four candidates contested the 17 elected seats, with the other five being returned unopposed.

Despite wet weather, voters began queuing outside the 20 polling stations in seven towns and about 50 villages more than an hour before the poll opened.

The candidates included Mahmud mardi, editor of Bahrain's main Arabic newspaper Al Adhws, H.M. Aryan, commercial manager of the British-African and Eastern Co., Hassan Mohamed Zein Al Abdin, Abedl Aziz Reachid, the youngest candidate, Jeafar All Ahmed, an insurance officer, Khalifa Miha'll and Abdel Aziz Shemian, who was reported to have been involved in riots against the then British Foreign Secretary, Mr. Selwyn Lloyd in 1956.
