  • Description

FLOOD SCENES ON THE BANKS OF THE CONGO RIVER WERE FILMED IN THE REGION OF LEOPOLDVILLE, DEC. 1/2.

BY THE END OF LAST NOVEMBER, THE CONGO HAD REACHED ITS HIGHEST LEVEL SINCE 1908, RISING TWO FEET ABOVE THE PREVIOUS MAXIMUM. FLOOD WATER ISOLATED A NUMBER OF VILLAGES SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES UP-RIVER, BUT THE MAIN FORCE OF THE WATERS WAS SPENT AS THEY REACHED LEOPOLDVILLE, WHICH IS SHIELDED IN THE EAST BY THE STANLEY POOL, A 20-MILE NATURAL CONGO LAKE ACTING AS A TEMPORARY STORAGE BASIN.

FLOODS AT LEOPOLDVILLE, WHERE THE BANKS OF THE CONGO ARE LOWER THAN ON THE BRAZZAVILLE SIDE, HIT ROADS IN THE RIVERSIDE INDUSTRIAL QUARTER. THE FERRY SERVICE BETWEEN LEOPOLDVILLE AND BRAZZAVILLE - ACROSS THE BORDER SEPARATING THE TWO CONGO REPUBLICS, WHICH WAS REOPENED ONLY A WEEK EARLIER - CAME ALMOST TO A STANDSTILL WHEN THE QUAYS ON EITHER SIDE BECAME PARTIALLY SUBMERGED. THE FEW BOATS STILL NEGOTIATING THE SWOLLEN RIVER WERE CRAMMED BY A CLAMOURING HOST OF DELAYED PASSENGERS.
