Background: A strange assembly of cars was gathered at Portland in Oregon on Thursday (28 August) for the start of a fourteen hundred mile speed test rally. But this isn't a typical racing event. Whoever walks off with the top honours will be the driver of the car with the highest fuel economy and the lowest exhaust emission.
Entries from across the United States, Japan and Canada were competing with the inventions ranging from a two cylinder Volkswagen to a propane powered plastic sports car.
One of the officials of the event, sponsored by Western Washington College and the University of California at Los Angeles, said some of the cars may eventually come off the production line at Detroit.
One of the most interesting types is the Japanese entry running on liquid hydrogen. The scientists have pointed out that if man runs out of hydro-carbon fuels, we can still make hydrogen from water and with the use of electrical power.
In fact the hydrogen car could supersede the electric car as the favoured alternative fuel vehicle of the future. but according to the experts it still has a long way to go before it can be commercially produced.
The rally organisers said that it would take Detroit at least five years from conception of an idea to producing a new car. And at the moment the motor manufacturers were not willing to accept any new ideas.
No mechanical problems were reported on the first leg of the five day rally. And fuel performance was said to top all previous estimates -- with diesel powered cars achieving seventy miles per gallon.
