Four days after Major Gagarin's space flight, Moscow was still actively celebrating the new hero.... the space-age Columbus, as he has been called.
Wherever you looked in the city, there were signs of jubilation - portraits of Yuri Gagarin were everywhere... in windows on streetlamps, on cars and in the newspapers. Women carrying flags marched through Red Square in honour of the hero.
There were rumours that a luxurious new flat in Moscow would be provided for Major Gagarin and his family.
But as the celebrations continued, one of the intriguing questions still wrapped in mystery was, how did the space pioneer make the return to earth? At a press conference, Major Gagarin himself would not say: according to Moscow Radio, witnesses say him float to earth by parachute.
