  • Description

Before dawn on Saturday (27 April), 100 members of Portugal's secret police were taken from their headquarters in central Lisbon and, under a heavy military guard, were driven to the Caxias Jail for internment.

Their headquarters had provided the last pocket of resistance to the military coup which toppled the Government of Mr. Marchello Caetano two days earlier.

Visnews cameraman, Michael Gore, was threr to cover this imporant even in Portugal's new political freedom.

The police surrendered on Friday (26 April), but were kept inside the headquarters until soldiers ringing the building could disperse anti-police demonstrators and make the transfer safely.

At the Caxias Jail they were taken to cells vacated a few hours earlier by political prisoners -- men who they themselves had sent to jail.

The new military junta under General Antonio De Spinola, has disbanded the secret police as part of a programme to restore political freedom.
